On March 21-22 Skyview Learning Academy in Douglas, Nebraska hosted its first Daughter Beloved girls-only conference and lock in. This all-inclusive weekend was created specifically for 4th to 10th grade girls to remind them of their purpose in life as beloved daughters of God and what it takes to become an honorable young woman. Sessions were presented by local professionals on topics such as bullying, modesty, purity, sexting, sex trafficking, maintaining a smart online presence and more.
Skyview’s director, Michele Ray, said, “After finding out last month that my 10-year-old’s friend set up an online account for my daughter (unbeknownst to me) and that a 42-year-old man was messaging her, this conference took on a whole new meaning for me. It’s a sick world we live in and we must inform and educate our daughters as a means to protect them.”
Guest speakers for the weekend included Dr. Heather Elton, a chiropractic physician with a degree in Clinical Nutrition from Lincoln, who shared a message called Finding God’s Purpose. Union College graduate Angela Heam also presented on a variety of topics such as cyber bullying, popular social media do’s and don’ts, and Being Digitally Safe and Savvy. Lauren Young, a third-year nursing student from Union College, presented Always Changing to the younger girls. The older girls viewed a video called Chosen that describes the real world of sex trafficking.
Additionally, the weekend provided Minute to Win It games, lots of laughter, door prizes, healthy food options and praise songs. “Our prayer is that their lives will be touched, they will be armed with a real-life knowledge of the evils that exist and that they will remain forever focused on building a solid relationship with their Savior,” said Ray. “We are looking forward to planning 2016’s event!”
