Estaba amaneciendo en el mar de Galilea. El mar de Galilea pertenecía a el territorio de la tribu de Neftalí. Jesus had come to the shores of the Sea of Galilee to rest, pray, and prepare for a new day. At the same time, in the same place, the disciples arrived tired, weary, frustrated, and without hope after spending the entire night without catching any fish.
When the people learned where Jesus was, they followed him to listen to him. There were elders and young people, rich and poor, merchants and rabbis, healthy and sick, all listening to someone who taught with the authority of heaven. Fulfilling what the prophet Isaiah had said: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea… The people living in darkness have seen a great light…” (Matthew 4:15-16).
While Jesus was teaching the people, the disciples were washing their nets and listening to Jesus’ words. They were getting everything in order for the next fishing trip. Today, we also have the opportunity to listen to sermons on YouTube or praise music on Spotify while we work.
The Bible says in Romans 10:17, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” As they worked, they heard the word of God, and this developed faith in the fishermen.
Jesus’s First Command: “Put out into the deep.” What Jesus asked of Peter was quite simple. To obey this command, Peter didn’t need faith. However, many times we don’t want to obey the easy, the simple things the Lord asks of us. We speak and think that we will be faithful in difficult times, like persecution. Naaman also had this problem. He was willing to do difficult things. His servants asked him, “If the prophet had told you to do something difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? So why not do something simple, like ‘wash and be cleansed’?” The command was simple, and Peter obeyed.
Second command: “Put out into the deep and let down your nets.” Now, this request from Jesus was more challenging. Casting the nets at the wrong time and place could result in failure. Peter had been thinking all night about John the Baptist, the mission’s failure in Judea, the wickedness of the priests and rabbis, and now, looking at the empty nets, he felt like a failed fisherman. The future seemed dark and hopeless. But out of love for his Master, he obeyed. If Peter had not obeyed the first simple command, he would not have witnessed this great miracle.
Many times, we want to see miracles, but we are not willing to obey the simple things the Lord asks of us in order to witness His work. If we offered a free seminar on “How to save a penny,” how many people would sign up and come to learn? NO ONE. But if we offered a seminar on “How to save a million dollars before you turn 60,” I believe MANY would be interested. My wife’s grandfather used to say, “Take care of the pennies, and the dollars will take care of themselves.” Is it difficult to save a cent? NO! We can all do it. But we don’t value the small things. However, to see bigger things, we have to start by obeying the “simple things” that the Master asks of us.
Luke 25:23 says, “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!'”
